Tom Vadakkan not a big leader: Rahul Gandhi after Congress spokesperson joins BJP

A day after senior Congress leader Tom Vadakkan resigned from the Congress, Rahul Gandhi on Friday sought to downplay the exit of the close aide of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi saying he was not a big leader. Vadakkan spent close to two decades in the Congress before crossing over to the BJP. He was the secretary to Congress chairperson Sonia Gandhi. Reacting to his exit, Rahul Gandhi while responding to reporters in Chattisgarh said: Vadakkan? No, no Vadakkan is not a big leader. After joining the BJP, Tom Vadakkan said that he was deeply hurt over the Congress partys response on Pulwama terror strike. He said that the Congress questioned the integrity of the armed forces which was not acceptable to him. The attack by Pakistani terrorists on our land and the reaction by my party was sad indeed. It hurt me deeply when the integrity of the armed forces was questioned. That is precisely the reason why I am here. It is not about ideology but about patriotism, Vadakkan said. In an apparent criticism of Rahul Gandhi, Vadakkan who hails from Kerala said that the dynastic politics has reached its zenith and the party workers dont know whom to listen to and who is the power centre. It has been reported that he was miffed with the party over the denials of a ticket in Lok Sabha polls in 2009 as well as in 2014. Media reports said he had been sidelined in the party this time as well. Reports suggest that the BJP may field him from a seat in Kerala in upcoming general elections. The BJP has been trying hard to make inroads in the state where it is yet to open its account. In 2014, the saffron party had contested 18 of 20 seats but could not win any; though the party had secured 10.33 per cent vote share. Kerala will vote in a single phase on April 23. The results will be declared on May 23.
